Walnut Worktops
American Black Walnut is the most highly prized furniture timber in the world. Its intense richness and beautiful grain have captivated furniture makers over the world for centuries, with good reason. An American Black Walnut worktop is simply sensational.
We use walnut worktops a lot in kitchens with good lighting to stunning effect, particularly in contemporary kitchens with gloss units or stainless steel for example. You can use a Black Walnut worktop to soften a kitchen or make the detail sharper depending on the lighting.
Do bear in mind ‘European Walnut’ – which generally means Turkish walnut – is much paler, softer, and includes lots of sapwood as it a much smaller tree. The effects are completely different, and although we can supply European Walnut worktops if specified, we don’t really recommend it. The best Black Walnut worktops are from the North Eastern USA, as the growing conditions are harsh which makes for the beautiful colour and structure.
A Walnut worktop has very strong antiseptic properties, which makes it extremely rot resistant, and the perfect surface for preparing food. Excellent around areas of high water use like sinks, it keeps its colour and texture over years and years of use. Slightly easier to work with than White Oak, Black Walnut still needs super sharp tooling to cut well and prevent breakout. Our staves are 40 mm wide and vary from 120 mm to over 1200 mm, so the quality of the timber is immediately obvious.
The Mountain Hardwoods workshop can make up a Walnut worktop to almost any size and shape. We have made Walnut worktops over 5.5 metres long and over 1.8 metres wide. As well as all manner of sink cut outs, corners, curves, drop downs, mitre cuts and finishing detail, we can also oil the worktops so they are ready for immediate installation. We are happy to do as much, or as little work as you would like us to do.
A word about our suppliers and the walnut they use in their worktops. Our suppliers are one of the largest producers of walnut paneling for furniture and worktops in the world. They exclusively use top grade (proper industry classification grade, not ‘grade A’, which could mean anything) walnut from New York State close to the Canadian border, and the results are immediately evident in these walnut worktops. Please compare any other supplier with us by spending just £ 3.50 on a sample. You’ll be glad you did.
Made using the same high grade Walnut used in our basic 40 mm stave Walnut worktops. However, the difference is these worktops are made up of much wider staves, showing off much more of the natural beauty of the North American Black Walnut. A 640 mm wide worktop is around 9 staves wide for the deluxe compared to 16 staves for the standard.
To provide a high level of structural stability, these wider stave worktops are constructed using two 20mm pannels, both made of solid Walnut, which are then sandwiched together using ultra strong polyurethane adhesive. The result - a 40 mm thick, wide stave Walnut worktop of great strength and rigidity.
The front and back edges of these worktops are made of a true 40 mm thick stave of Walnut, thus concealing the sandwich join for a neat and elegant finish.
